Writing Slates HC106

Three grey slates in a variety of sizes.

  • A slate was a thin piece of stone (usually slate rock), usually set into a wooden frame.
  • Students used a slate pencil (made of softer stone or chalk) to write on it.
  • During the 1800's slates were used by school children all over the world
  • Slate was more durable and cheaper than paper.

> Read this article about the discovery of slates at Kemp House, Kerikeri, dating back to the 1830's with the first known example of written te reo Māori.
