Livestock branding has been used to identify ownership of cattle. The branding iron consists of an iron rod with a symbol or mark and was heated in a fire. When red-hot it was pressed against the cow's hide, leaving a permanent mark. Iron horse shoes were used to protect the horse's feet. Blacksmiths used heat to beat and shape the horse shoe to fit the hoof.
