Tākaro Game
E toru nga huinga kēmu Tākaro hei ako kupu i roto i te reo Māori | Three sets of Tākaro games to learn words in te reo Māori.
Each set has 57 playing cards, and 8 reference cards to help learn the kupu before starting the game. If you have seen or played the game 'Spot It', Tākaro is similar but in te reo Māori ( you could start by playing it in English to get your class used to the game if need be).
Set one: Tākaro - Original
Set two: Tākaro - Bits and Bobs (household objects)
Set three: Tākaro - Into the Wild (ngāi kīrehe | fauna & ngāi tipu | flora )
Each card features a number of symbols which have a direct Māori translation, which players need to memorize and learn (they can use the reference sheet when first playing the game). Players flip over two cards competing to find the matching symbols; the first player to call out the correct translation wins the round.
Tākaro can be played by ages 4+ with each round lasting 10-15 minutes. It will rely on the recognition of 57 various symbols, and the correct pronunciation of their Māori names.
By the end of the game, players will be able to confidently recall a number of the symbols and their corresponding Te Reo Māori translations helping to expand their vocabulary.
How to play
Shuffle the cards and deal one card face up in front of each player. Players may also like to grab a reference sheet at this point, especially for their first few rounds.
The rest of the deck is put face down into the middle of the group
One person will reveal the top card of the deck.
Players must quickly find the symbol on the centre card that matches one on their own card and yell it out, in te reo Māori of course.
The player who does this first (and correctly) takes the card from the top of the deck. This becomes their new card which they place face up in front of them.
A new card is revealed from the deck and play continues like this until the deck is depleted.
The winner is the player with the most cards.
