The first working typewriter was invented in 1808 however commercial production did not occur until the 1870s. Remington was a market leader along with companies such as Underwood and Hammond.
The QWERTY keyboard arrangement was patented in 1868, by Christopher Lathem Sholes to Remington. Remington began producing typewriters just a few months later. One of their early customers was Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, one of Twain’s most successful works, published in 1876, is widely believed to be the first novel written on a typewriter.
In the 20th Century typewriters became an essential tool for business and education.
