A wooden butter mould with handle and gently sloping sides. Rectangular in shape.
Butter is made from the cream of cow's milk. It dates back to ancient times, as early as 2000BC. Prior to modern factory made butter, households would make their own butter. these types of moulds were used to shape the butter as it was fashionable to make lumps of butter into blocks. In Tauranga early residents kept cows which were allowed to roam the streets eating roadside grass. From these cows they got their cream and butter.
