White cotton petticoat with drawstring waistband and deep frill at bottom.
Petticoats were worn by women as an undergarment from the 1500's / 16th century onwards for warmth and fashion. Petticoats gave the wearer the fashionable shape of the time, full or narrow. During the 1900's / 20th century petticoats became a less common addition to a woman's wardrobe.
The word "petticoat" came from Middle English pety cote or pety coote, meaning "a small coat/cote". Petticoat is also sometimes spelled "petty coat".
