A black triangular shaped sad iron with black trivet for the iron to rest on.
Sad irons (meaning solid) were first used in the 17th Century. The iron was heated in a fire or on the stove. Detachable handles were patented in the 1870s and made ironing much safer. It was still hot and difficult work.
