A gramophone in a black box with fabric overlay and hinged lid with leather carry handle. A chrome needle and handle with felt and chrome turntable.
The gramophone was invented by Emile Berliner in 1887 and was a significant improvement in sound quality. Berliner, a German, was living in America and founded the Gramophone Company which mass produced 'sound disks' for the first time. His Masters Voice H.M.V. became the trademark for the Gramophone Company in 1899.
* Our gramophones are 'Eyes Only' for students. Teachers may operate the gramophone to show students how they work and to listen to music - only teachers may touch or operate the gramophones. This is due to the delicate nature of the mechanisms in these objects, and the ease of these being damaged *
