A black metal Remington Portable #1 typewriter in a black case. The #1 Portable was the first real portable typewriter. Over half a million were made.

The first working typewriter was invented in 1808 however commercial production did not occur until the 1870s. Remington was a market leader along with companies such as Underwood and Hammond. In the 20th Century typewriters became an essential tool for business and education.
