Writing Slates & Slate Pencils HC106/1-18

Six rectangular grey slates in a variety of sizes. Three slates are held in wooden frames. Six grey slender slate pencils made of soft slate and six calico cloths for cleaning.

Used during the 1800s by school children all over the world. Slate was more durable and cheaper than paper. Slates were written on with slate pencils made of soft slate, soapstone or pressed clay.
