In Fiji, drinking kava plays an important part in both business and social life. The kava is mixed in a wooden bowl used especially for this ceremony. The root of the kava plant is cut into small pieces and grated to a pulp before straining and steeping in water. A certain ritual is observed as it is served and drunk from coconut shell bowls.
